Market Dynamics
Introduction
Transportation composites are composite materials whereby at least two components are incorporated into a single material with unique physical or chemical properties. In this process, the used materials end up forming a composite that has properties unlike that of the combined elements. Automotive is one of the most attractive industries to incorporate polymer matrix composites because of the advantages they offer, such as low density, high strength, and toughness, thereby improving the fuel consumption and performance of the vehicles.
Impact-resistant transportation composites are rapidly growing due to several factors. These include the need for an increased fuel economy and reduced emissions, since by lightweighting the composite material used in the vehicles, the overall weight of the car is reduced, thus leading to better fuel efficiency and thus a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This corresponds to the increasing pressures exhibited by governments and regulatory authorities from across the globe who continue to set ambitious environmental standards, putting pressure on manufacturers to adopt sustainable materials. Further, enhancements of various composite materials like high-strength carbon fiber composites and newly developing manufacturing processes have facilitated more and more usage of these composite materials in transportation disciplines. The automotive industry plays a crucial role in the demand for composites thanks to the continuous transition toward lighter vehicles, especially in the segment of electrified vehicles, or EVs. The aerospace industry also remained an important force in this regard, as has been their practice in the use of composites for their material properties that have a high strength-to-weight ratio and higher durability. Other advantages of the composites also include the economic benefits related to the low cost of maintenance and operations. Finally, the rising customer needs for high performance, safety, and styling characteristics of cars have led to the use of composite materials as solutions for these demands by vehicle manufacturers.
Recent Product Development:
- In May 2024, Syensqo released Aerospace 1003, which is a new grade of epoxy-based structural paste adhesive that is suitable for bonding of composite parts mostly owing to the fact that it delivers high-temperature strength performance.
- In Jan 2024, Toray Industries, Inc. developed TORAYCA M46X carbon fiber. The new offering is about 20% higher in strength than other products from the TORAYCA™ MX series yet achieves a high tensile modulus. With the help of applying polymers in using TORAYCA™ M46X, the amount of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic material is decreased, which in turn decreases it impacts on the environment.
- In November of 2023, Solvay successfully spun off its Specialty activities to its newly formed Subsidiary Syensqo, which can be considered a significant turning point in that company’s past. This action represents a significant strategic shift for the Group and makes it a dominant player in other essential chemicals globally. It will be composites going forward from this company known as Syensqo SA.

By Resin Type
“Thermosets are expected to remain the dominant resin in the market during the forecast period.”
- The transportation composites market is segmented into thermoset and thermoplastic.
- Thermoset resins possess good mechanical characteristics, including superior strength and rigidity necessary for the transport segment.
- Thermoset composites possess good thermal stability compared to thermoplastic composites and are therefore suitable in high-temperature application areas.
- These resins show good chemical and solvent tolerance, which is ideal for improving the overall performance of composite materials in chemically aggressive applications.
- Thermoset resins give good mechanical strength and dimensional stability, which are desirable for withstanding the rigors of transportation applications.
- Thermoset composites applied in transportation vehicles result in a lighter weight of the vehicle that translates to better fuel economy and less emissions.
- However, they possess better properties compared to thermoplastics; they are relatively cheaper than thermoplastics, making them suitable for use on a large scale.
By Manufacturing Process Type
“Compression molding is expected to remain the dominant manufacturing process in the market during the forecast period.”
- The market is segmented into compression molding, injection molding, resin transfer molding, and others.
- Compression molding is very useful for large volume parts production that is in auto industrial applications, thus making it useful in transportation.
- This procedure is also regarded as being more economical as compared to the other composite manufacturing processes, especially for the large production scale, because less material is wasted and there is lower manpower cost.
- Compression molding is versatile in terms of the type of material that can be used and can be applied for thermoset and thermoplastic composites.
- The tier is beneficial in the generation of intricate forms and shapes of the components that are common in the transport industry.
- The part formed through compression molding normally offers good mechanical properties, which is ideal for transportation parts that typically must bear loads and be exposed to rough usage.
By Fiber Type
“Glass is expected to remain the dominant fiber in the market during the forecast period.”
- The transportation composites market is segmented into glass, carbon, natural, and others.
- Glass fibers are cheaper compared to other high-performance fibers like carbon and aramid fibers and hence can preferably be used in large volumes.
- Glass fibers give a high strength-to-weight ratio; hence, the right strength and strength-to-weight ratio of the fiber is enough to give the required strength and performance without adding extra weight to the components.
- Glass fibers also have high resistance to corrosion and chemical attack, thus making composite parts used in transportation applications have longer lives.
- They are equally suitable for use in most manufacturing processes of the composite, and these include compression molding, resin transfer molding, and filament winding, among others.
By Application Type
“Interiors are expected to remain dominant in the market during the forecast period.”
- The transportation composites market is segmented into interior, exterior, and others.
- The application of composite materials inside automobiles helps in decreasing the total weight of vehicles, which in turn reduces fuel consumption and hence less pollution levels.
- Reinforced plastic composites therefore have a higher design capability compared to metals, which enables the moulding of elaborate shapes and designs for interior trims that add beauty and functionality to motor vehicles.
- Composite materials deliver high degrees of durability and the ability to withstand wear and tear, which is crucial for interior parts that experience constant use and fluctuating conditions.
- These composites can be designed to provide good damping and insulation qualities so that the level of noise and vibrations inside the vehicle cabin is minimized.
By Transportation Type
“Airways are expected to remain the dominant transportation type in the market during the forecast period.”
- The transportation composites market is segmented into airways, railways, waterways, and roadways.
- Composites offer a lighter material that allows aircraft to carry less fuel, which in turn means lower costs of operation and emissions of greenhouse gases, both very important to the aviation industry.
- They also stated that smaller aircraft require less fuel, which forms one of the most significant costs incurred by airlines. Certain composites used in the design and structure of cars can contribute to better fuel efficiency, which is a factor that is easily linked to profitability.
- The Composites have a high strength-to-weight ratio, which is very important for aircraft because they require lightweight, but at the same time they should be strong to provide rigidity and safety to the aircraft.
- Composites exhibit excellent corrosion properties, making them ideal for aircraft since they are prone to different environmental factors such as heat, humidity, and chemical exposure.
- Overall, composites offer better fatigue behavior than metals, which translates into longer life expectancies of aircraft parts and lower maintenance requirements and costs.
