India's Passenger Vehicle Market in the Context of Global EV Adoption

SUVs continue to attract a large share of buyers in India, with utility vehicles accounting for 68% of passenger-vehicle sales in Q2 FY2026–27, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Electric vehicle adoption tells a different story. While electric cars made up 25% of new car sales worldwide in 2025, their share in India was nearly 4%, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). This difference helps put September's launches into perspective. Indian buyers continue to have varied preferences, and automakers are responding with a mix of conventional, hybrid, CNG, and electric powertrains.
