Manufacturers are investing in electric propulsion, smart navigation systems, premium interiors, and connected technologies. Innovation across the pontoon boat industry is moving quickly. And yet, most new pontoon boats still ship with a wood floor. That is not an oversight. It is a deliberate material choice, and understanding that choice reveals how material adoption actually works in manufacturing.
The global pontoon boat market, valued at approximately USD 2.5 billion in 2025, is projected to reach USD 4.8 billion by 2034, reflecting continued growth in recreational boating. As manufacturers compete on performance, comfort, and ownership experience, material selection is becoming an increasingly important differentiator.
Which raises an interesting question: despite the availability of advanced material alternatives, why does marine plywood remain one of the most widely used decking materials in pontoon boats today?
The common assumption is straightforward: newer materials eventually replace older ones. By that logic, marine plywood should have largely disappeared from pontoon boat construction. Several alternative decking materials offer advantages in areas such as moisture resistance, maintenance, and durability. Yet marine-grade plywood remains deeply embedded in the industry.
Evidence of plywood's continued relevance can be seen throughout the pontoon ecosystem. Marine-grade plywood remains widely available through both OEM supply channels and aftermarket decking suppliers, including PontoonStuff, DeckMate, and Fence for Pontoons.
That persistence reflects ongoing demand. If plywood were rapidly disappearing from production and replacement markets, the supply chain would likely show clear signs of that transition. Instead, it remains a common material choice across much of the industry.
The explanation begins with economics. Standard 3/4-inch CCA-treated marine plywood typically sells for approximately $100–$150 per sheet, depending on grade and supplier. A typical pontoon deck requires only a handful of sheets, keeping structural decking costs relatively manageable.
Many advance materials and composite decking solutions carry a higher upfront cost. For manufacturers producing at scale, even modest cost differences influence material selection decisions. Superior performance alone rarely guarantees widespread adoption. Materials gain market share when performance improvements justify the additional cost.
Marine plywood also benefits from something many alternative materials struggle against, it performs well enough.
When properly installed and protected beneath carpet or vinyl flooring, treated marine plywood can provide decades of service. Suppliers regularly cite long service lives and warranty programs built around that expectation. Material transitions typically accelerate when an existing solution becomes a clear bottleneck. In pontoon decking, plywood continues to deliver acceptable performance for many manufacturers and boat owners. That reduces the urgency to replace it.
None of this means composites are standing still. Their adoption has steadily expanded in decking systems, seating structures, storage compartments, and interior components where moisture resistance, durability, and reduced maintenance offer clear advantages.

The discussion is therefore not about whether composites outperform wood in specific attributes. In many cases, they do.The more relevant question is whether those benefits justify the additional cost across thousands of boats produced annually.
The continued use of marine plywood is not evidence that the pontoon boat industry is resistant to innovation. Rather, it illustrates how material adoption typically works in manufacturing. New materials succeed when their performance advantages align with economics, manufacturing realities, and customer expectations.
That process is already underway in pontoon boats. Composites continue to gain ground where their benefits create measurable value, particularly in premium applications. At the same time, marine plywood remains a practical solution because it delivers a competitive balance of performance, cost, and durability. And that may be the more important lesson. Material adoption is rarely determined by technical performance alone. In manufacturing, the materials that gain market share are often the ones that deliver the strongest combination of performance, cost, manufacturability, and customer value.
