    Market Insights

Sprayed-in-place pipe (SIPP) is a rapidly emerging trenchless pipe rehabilitation method that offers a cost-effective means of rehabilitating corroded, leaking or damaged pipelines. It is a seamless method and can rehabilitate pipes ranging from 4” to 110” in diameters. The lining material used for SIPP has to be compliant under the certification and standards of NSF/ANSI 61, which has various norms to prevent the contamination of potable drinking water. SIPP is among the third-most preferred trenchless technology by the municipal authorities of the USA for rehabilitating deteriorated pipelines.

There are various trenchless methods available for the rehabilitation of damaged pipelines, such as SIPP, CIPP, and Slip lining. CIPP is the most preferred method for small-diameter pipes, whereas SIPP is more preferred for pipe diameter ranges between 18 to 36 inches. SIPP accounts for more than 10% of the total trenchless pipe rehabilitation market in 2020. CIPP is the most dominant trenchless rehabilitation method, followed by SIPP. Both methods are well established in the mature markets and are briskly gaining market traction in the developing markets.

Over the past five years, the SIPP market has tremendously grown with the rise in government’s expenditures on rehabilitating pipeline infrastructures coupled with aging pipeline infrastructures of several major economies of the world. The market was estimated to continue maintaining its growth momentum in the year 2020 as well.

However, the rapid spread of the pandemic has interrupted its growth trajectory with an expected decline in the global economy forcing government utilities to temporarily curtail their investment in new projects. As a result, the SIPP market growth is estimated to contract significantly in the year 2020. Strong market fundamentals, such as increasing government spending on pipeline infrastructure, aging pipelines, increasing awareness of the trenchless methods with a continuous shift from conventional dig-and-replace method to trenchless rehabilitation methods, and lower cost of the trenchless methods, are likely to propel the market at a healthy pace over the next five years to reach an estimated value of US$ 0.8 billion in 2026.

Sprayed-in-Place Pipe Market Share by Application Type

Based on the application type, the market is segmented as water main pipes, wastewater pipes, and storm pipes. Water main pipe is likely to remain the most dominant as well as the fastest-growing segment in the market during the forecast period. Large infrastructure pipelines of the water mains coupled with the increasing propensity of government waterbodies to rehabilitate deteriorated water main pipelines to conserve the loss of clean drinking water are the major demand generator of the market over the next five years. The rehabilitation of wastewater pipes and storm pipes is comparatively less regulated, thus, there is the presence of a large number of players for wastewater and stormwater pipe rehabilitation.

Sprayed-in-Place Pipe Market Share by Type of Materials

Based on the material type, the market is segmented as cement mortar, epoxy coating, polyurea coating, polyurethane coating, and geopolymer mortar. Cement mortar is projected to remain the most dominant material type in the SIPP market during the forecast period, whereas, geopolymer mortar is likely to be the fastest-growing material type during the same period. Cement mortar is the oldest material among the SIPP family, which is being used since the 1920s for the rehabilitation of pipelines. Longer service life, low-cost, excellent corrosion resistance, easy to install, and excellent structural strength are the key benefits offered by cement mortars compared to other materials.

Sprayed-in-Place Pipe Market Share by Pipe Diameter Type

Based on the pipe diameter type, the 18-36-inch pipe category is estimated to remain the largest segment of the market during the forecast period, propelled by a large variety of pipes falling under this pipe diameter range, whereas the <18-inch pipe category is likely to be the fastest-growing segment during the same period. Many factors are depending on the diameter of the pipe, such as the selection of equipment and quantity of material to be used. SIPP is among the most preferred method for 18-36-inch diameter pipes.

    Regional Insights

In terms of region, North America is projected to remain the largest market for SIPP during the forecast period. Aging pipeline infrastructures of the North American region with most of them have passed the average lifespan of 50 years coupled with increasing focus of government utilities to control water main break rates is the key demand generator of the region’s market. Rehabilitation of these infrastructure improves the service life of pipes around 30-70 years. The USA is not only the largest market for SIPP in North America but also in the world. The country is the early mover in the trenchless pipe rehabilitation concerning material adoption and technology.
