Introduction

A turbocharger is a device used in automotive engines to increase power output by forcing more air into the combustion chamber. This increased air supply allows more fuel to be burned, resulting in greater power production without the need for a larger engine.

The basic principle behind a turbocharger is simple: it utilizes the energy of exhaust gases exiting the engine to spin a turbine. This turbine is connected to a compressor wheel through a shaft. As the turbine spins, it drives the compressor wheel, which draws in fresh air and compresses it before delivering it to the engine's intake manifold.

By compressing the air before it enters the engine, the turbocharger increases the air density, allowing more oxygen molecules to be present during combustion. This enables the engine to burn more fuel efficiently, resulting in increased power output.

Turbocharger Market Drivers

The key turbocharger market drivers are:

  • An expected rebound in vehicle production, & emission and fuel efficiency regulations.
  • Increasing penetration/installation rates of turbochargers in gasoline engine-powered vehicles is the driving force of the market during the forecast period.

The fuel efficiency and environmental emission regulations in many developed and developing countries are putting pressure on automakers to either reduce the vehicle weight or downsize the engine to achieve the targets. The automakers are downsizing engines to meet the stringent global fuel economy and emission regulations and customer demand for better-performing vehicles. Turbochargers help downsized engines improve fuel economy by 20% to 40% as compared to larger, naturally aspirated engines.
